South Africa has strong rhetoric about participatory development, for example, in the White Paper on Developmental Local Government and subsequently in the Municipal Systems Act. The reality is that in many areas we try and deliver to our people, and treat them as passive recipients of development. Government cannot make development happen - development happens because of the decisions and actions of our people, taking forward their lives and livelihoods. Government must provide the enabling conditions, which release the energy of our people - just look at Asia to see the potential of that energy unfolding. To reserve a seat, kindly RSVP by 2 July.

Analyses conducted by ESSD reveal major obstacles in the education pathway system. The majority of learners entering FET colleges, nursing training institutions and learnerships have already achieved a National Senior Certificate prior to enrolment.
